Yo!
I’m in sunny Sweden and much impressed by their marketing capabilities. Alfred Nobel not only invented dynamite he created the world’s most powerful Awards brand. And successfully rebranded himself as he wanted to. The Nobel Museum makes a small fortune selling ice-cream that was till recently on the menu of the annual banquet. It’s different of course but it’s hefty price tag of nearly Rs 1000 a plate relies on the Nobel heritage. The ABBA Museum is a very well designed experiential space and is not at all kitschy. It’s one of the more fun museums I’ve been to. Through their music, movie, musical, museum and now restaurant and show- ABBA has sustained their brand for over 40 years. The restaurant Ekstedt does not use any electricity to cook and that’s a great experience.
Lest you think I’m uncharacteristically gushy let me tell you that the cab drivers in Stockholm can beat our Namma Bengaluru autos in a race of whose meter runs fastest. Uber has been a real life saver. Whether it’s big things like land records or cab fares tech can bring in transparency.
The marketing savvy of Sweden also stands out as our first stop was Copenhagen. A very pretty city but could do more to market itself. (The famous Little Mermaid is too little for example!)I’m off to Angry Birds park soon and then Santa Claus village! Astounding how these tiny countries produced these super sized brands!
